9 Tips for Staying in Shape Throughout Winter

Working out in the winter can often be a struggle because of not being able to get outdoors as often as in the summer or dealing with the holidays where food is plentiful. Unfortunately, giving up on your health and well-being isn’t detrimental to your overall happiness. A lot of people let themselves go in the wintertime, only to find that they become frustrated and spend hundreds on pills, potions and workout classes just to get to where they were before the winter started.

1. Get a Piece of Equipment

It’s a good idea to invest in a quality piece of equipment that you can set up in your home or apartment. This can be a treadmill, a stair stepper, an elliptical or a stationary bike. No matter what you choose, keep it cheap and affordable. There’s no reason for you to spend a pretty penny on the equipment that you want to buy for the wintertime.

2. Find a Good Workout Video

If you’d rather have different workouts throughout the winter, you might want to consider looking at some workout videos online. Most of these are available for free, which allows you to exercise without it costing you a small fortune. However, there are many workout DVD programs that you can buy for yourself and use as often as you want or need.

3. Get a Workout Buddy

If you get someone else involved with you when staying in shape over the winter, you’re both likely to stick with it and keep your bodies in good shape. This could be a child, spouse or a good friend. The more people who are joining with you on your journey to health, the better and more accountable you’ll be.

4. Don’t Make the Holidays a Binge Fest

Unfortunately, a lot of people totally give up on their healthy eating and exercise during the holidays in place of food. While this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t enjoy yourself during the holidays and try delicious foods, only celebrate on the actual holidays. Do not make your life a binge fest from October through January just because it’s the holiday season because you’ll have quite a lot of work to do on your body in the spring.

5. Don’t Use New Years as the Only Way to Start Over

Many people give up on eating healthy and exercising thinking that they will just start over on New Years. Unfortunately, this is a problem because of the fact that you’re giving up on staying fit and may have quite a bit of work to do on New Years because of your bad decisions. Instead of starting on the turn of the new year, start right now and work to being a healthier and happier you.

6. Join a Class

Classes are often held indoors, which enables you to get a good workout in without you having to worry that it’s wintertime or that you can’t work out. Better yet, you may want to consider joining a local gym that’s easy to get to, especially in the winter. This allows you to work out when and where you want to stay in shape.

7. Bundle Up for Outdoor Recreation

The wintertime has a variety of activities and recreation that you can do and still stay fit. Skiing, sledding, and snowboarding are all incredibly fun outdoor activities that are specific to the wintertime. They help you to stay in fit while still allowing you to get outside for a bit. Just be sure to bundle up before doing anything outside in the middle of winter.

8. Remember Summer Bodies are Made in the Winter

Your summer body is going to be made in the winter. If you fail to work on your body in the winter, you may find that you just do not like the way that you look in the summer. This can cause you to over cover yourself and just not participate in many activities. This is why it’s crucial to stay fit even in the winter.

9. Have Fun

Getting fit and staying in shape is all about having fun with yourself and others. Join a class, workout to a program on the computer or get a piece of equipment that you like using at home. If you’re not having fun, you’re not going to stick with your new, healthy lifestyle.
